Background of the Study
Parental support plays a pivotal role in shaping the success of online education, particularly for secondary school students who require guidance and motivation to navigate digital learning environments. In Kaduna East LGA, Kaduna State, the transition to online education has accentuated the importance of parental involvement in ensuring that students have the necessary resources, discipline, and emotional backing to succeed academically (Kamau, 2023). Parents are increasingly expected to assist with technology management, monitor academic progress, and facilitate a conducive learning environment at home. This involvement is especially critical in regions where schools may face challenges in delivering consistent digital education due to infrastructural limitations or resource constraints (Adewale, 2024). Recent research has highlighted that active parental support can mitigate some of the adverse effects of remote learning, such as reduced student engagement and motivation (Johnson, 2025). However, variations in socio-economic status, digital literacy among parents, and cultural attitudes toward online education can lead to disparities in the level of support provided. In some cases, parents are well-equipped and proactive in using digital tools to enhance their children’s learning, while in others, lack of familiarity with technology and competing work demands limit their involvement. This study aims to appraise the nature and extent of parental support for online education in Kaduna East LGA, examining how such support influences student performance and overall satisfaction with online learning experiences. Furthermore, the research seeks to understand the challenges that parents face and the strategies they employ to overcome these obstacles. By exploring the interplay between parental support and educational outcomes, the study contributes to a broader understanding of how home environments can be optimized to complement digital learning initiatives. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and community leaders seeking to develop comprehensive support systems that empower parents and enhance the effectiveness of online education (Kamau, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of parental support in online education, secondary school students in Kaduna East LGA face significant challenges due to varying levels of parental involvement. Many parents, particularly those with limited digital literacy or demanding work schedules, struggle to provide the necessary guidance and technical support required for effective online learning (Adewale, 2024). This lack of support often results in diminished student engagement, lower academic performance, and increased frustration among learners who may feel isolated in their educational journey. Additionally, the absence of structured mechanisms to facilitate parental involvement further exacerbates these challenges. Schools and educators often assume a level of parental participation that may not exist, leading to a disconnect between home support and school expectations (Johnson, 2025). The disparity in parental support is further compounded by socio-economic factors, as families with limited resources are less able to invest in technological tools and internet connectivity. Consequently, the digital divide is widened, leaving some students at a disadvantage. Moreover, the rapid shift to online education has outpaced the development of support systems and training for parents, leaving many without the necessary skills to assist their children effectively. This study aims to investigate the extent of parental support in Kaduna East LGA, identify the challenges faced by parents, and explore the relationship between parental involvement and student outcomes in online education. Addressing these issues is critical for creating a more inclusive and supportive digital learning environment. By understanding the underlying factors that hinder effective parental support, the research seeks to propose strategies that can enhance home-based learning support, thereby improving the overall quality of online education for secondary school students (Kamau, 2023).
